Who Is God, Where Is He, And How Do I Reach Him?

Do you ever find yourself asking:

  • Is there a God?

  • Who is God?

  • Where is God?

  • How can I talk to God?

Do you find yourself asking these questions more often when you’re afraid, sad, or lonely? In these moments, it’s as if we realize all of the things this world promises us fail and will never be enough. In these moments, we find ourselves looking and calling out to a God we've never called on or known before. Why do we do this? Could it be that deep down we know there is a God? Well, no matter the reason, the answers to our questions about God can be found in the Bible, and here is what it explains:

God is creator of all things, including you. He thought you were so special that He made you in His own image. Whether you see it or not, you were wonderfully made with the purpose to bring God glory. God also loves you so much that He sent His sinless Son Jesus to die as a sacrifice on your behalf, so you could choose eternal life with Him in heaven and be free of all your wrongdoings and mistakes.

All God wants from you is what everyone wants in a relationship. He wants you to love Him, believe in what He has done for you, do the things He has said are important to Him, apologize when you wrong Him, and spend quality time with Him as your number one priority.

Want to see more of what the Bible says about God and our relationship to Him? Here are some additional summaries and the verses they're found in throughout the Bible:

Who Is God & Who Are We?

God is the creator of all things, and He created you wonderfully and in His own image – you are so wonderfully designed you can actually bring God glory & honor!

  • God is the creator of all things - both seen and unseen, both the heavens and the earth (Colossians 1:16)

  • God created us, and created us in His own image (Genesis 1:27)

  • You are a wonderfully designed creation of God that was specially knit together, and are well known by God (Psalm 139:3:13-16)

  • God finds us so valuable, that He made us with the intent to represent Him & bring Him glory (Isaiah 43:7)

How Do We Find God & Grow Closer to Him?

If we search for God, He will meet us in the search. Faith In God’s Son Jesus, and following His instruction is the key to growing closer to God.

  • If we take action and look for God, He will come to us (James 4:8)

  • We can’t half-heartedly seek out God. We need to be all in with our whole heart, and then we will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13)

  • God gave us a way to reach Him and that's through Jesus (John 14:6)

  • Why did God send us Jesus? Just like breaking a law on earth, breaking God’s laws leads to judgement. However, God gave Jesus as a sacrifice on our behalf so we could be saved from the judgement we deserve. Now that is love! (John 3:16, Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8)

  • When we believe/have faith that Jesus died for us, that His death saved us from our sins, and that He conquered death to rise up from the grave - we are saved from the consequences of our wrong doing and can inherit heaven alongside our savior! The Bible even says God will claim us as His own children when we believe in Jesus! (1 John 5:1, Romans 10:9-10)

  • How do we get faith? Through reading the scriptures about Jesus! If you struggle to have faith, just read or listen to the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) or nearly any of the New Testament in the Bible, and your heart will change, and your faith will build! (Romans 10:17)

  • With our love & belief in Jesus we are given “the Spirit of Truth,” known as the “Holy Spirit,” which is given to us to help us through this life. The Holy Spirit will never leave us as we follow God. (John 14:15-17)

  • How do we show God our love for Him? Through loving Jesus, and by keeping & living out His commandments! (John 14:21, 1 john 5:3)

  • What about prayer? Prayer, or talking to God, is essential to growing closer to God. We are instructed to call out to God in faith, and to be in continuous conversation with Him! We are to fully involve God in our day to day from our praises to our fears. (1 Thessalonians 5:17, Philippians 4:6, John 14:13-)

How Does Sin (Not Following God’s Instructions) Affect Our Relationship with Him & How Do We Fix It?

Our sin literally causes us separation from God. However, if we repent – apologize to God for them and remove them from our lives, God will forgive us for each and every one!

  • There is no question about it - sin causes separation between us & God. Just like any relationship, doing the opposite of what someone has expressed as meaningful/important to them causes pain & distance. (Isaiah 59:2)

  • Even though sin causes separation from God, if we admit our mistakes to Him and ask Him to forgive us - He will forgive us! (2 Chronicles 7:14, 1 John 1:9)

  • No matter your sinful past, God will forgive you! (Mark 3:28)

  • God doesn’t desire to see anyone die or be without Him, no matter how sinful they are. He wants all of us to have a chance to repent and find Him! (Ezekiel 33:11, 2 Peter 3:8-11)

  • However, even though God forgives us our sins when asked, we can’t continue to live in our sin. The Bible makes it clear that if we are a child of God we can’t continue to live in sinful ways. Still, we make mistakes, but a mistake is different than an ongoing choice. You need to not only ask God for forgiveness for your sins, but you also need to actively cut sinful ways out of your life (1 John 3:9, Romans 6:1-2, Matthew 5:29-30, Galations 5:16)

What Does Believing in Jesus and Following God Get Us?

Belief in Jesus and following God gives your life a freedom and meaning like nothing else. You will feel purpose, love, value, and an understanding of things seen and unseen like never before. Also, you gain a promise of life beyond death – a life full of love & joy in eternity with your loving creator!

  • We are given rest from the pains and problems of this world (Matthew 11:28)

  • We gain a life beyond this earth that will no longer have pain or suffering (Revelations 21:4)

  • We gain a life beyond this earth - a life that is everlasting (1 Peter 1:3-6)
